1,000 Questions for CouplesIf you really want to get to know someone, go camping (please see below) with them.  You will quickly gain insight into their strength of character and tolerance for stress.

But firstly, have you ever played the simple game known as "20 Questions"?

The whole idea of the game is to guess what your partner is thinking of by only asking yes or no questions.  The game is limited to only 20 questions.

Well I forgot to play that before going camping and I regret it miserably.  I am still suffering from that mistake whenever we talk about vacation plans.

Let me explain.

I remember the first time I took my wife camping.  We went to the mountains and the weather was good at first, but I was totally inept at putting the tent up.  By the time I finished, it had begun to rain and my wife’s patience was growing thin.

She also wasn’t too pleased to realize that she had to walk up an enormous hill to get to the bathroom, which she then found to be terribly dirty and buggy – she just loves spiders and flies!

Apparently, I failed to pick a very good spot for the tent, since it was on a hill, and my wife kept sliding out of her sleeping bag all night.  This did not aid the situation.  It was now pouring rain and the whole area had become a mud pit.

Then, to top it all off, when we woke up in the morning, our clothing was all WET!  The next night I got the bright idea to put our remaining clothing in our sleeping bags to keep it dry.  Needless to say, this was too little, too late.  My wife was not impressed.

To this day, she still hates camping.  One time when we rented a Winnebago and drove it across the country, she insisted I park it in the hotel parking lot each evening and go inside to a comfortable room.

My wife makes a good argument about having the ability to shower without having to sit on the toilet.

So, take the advice from Michael Webb’s eBook, “1000 Questions for Couples” and ask her if she likes camping before you get too far down the path, or too far up the hill.

If not at least play the game. It could save you some grief later.
